The Kingkiller Chronicle Codex

Chandrian

Seven figures of shadow and fire; their names are silence, their legacy is ash.

The Chandrian are not merely men, but seven figures wrapped in myth and dread across the Four Corners of Civilization. Called 'the Hallowed' by some or simply 'them' by those who wish to survive, they are whispered as the architects of civilization's collapse—from the ruin of the Amyr centuries ago to the slaughter at Trebon. To the peasant, they are demons; to the scholar, a silence that defies understanding, wielding fire and shadow as easily as breath.

Lore & Background

Their true terror lies in what they leave behind: emptiness. Through their lanterns' sickly blue light, survivors are left unable to recall the Chandrian's presence, memories scrubbed clean as if they never existed. This erasure of truth is more dangerous than steel; it allows them to walk through history unnoticed. Survivors who dare speak their names risk drawing the attention of seven killers, for in this world, some things answer when called.

In Their Own Story

The wind died in the trees before they arrived. Kvothe felt it first as a drop in temperature, then as the sudden absence of crickets. In the distance, a single blue flame flickered against the darkening sky, burning without heat or smoke. He watched from the shadows of the barn, his breath shallow. They moved like smoke given form, seven figures cloaked in darkness that seemed to drink the moonlight. One turned, and though he could not see their face, Kvothe felt a gaze that stripped him bare. The air smelled of wet ash and old blood. Then, silence returned, absolute and suffocating, leaving only the memory of fear.

Reader's Guide

They are not monsters to be slayed, but a plague to be survived. Any pursuit of Chandrian lore is a path paved with dead scholars and forgotten villages. To understand them is to invite the shadow they cast; piecing together their history requires navigating fragments of forbidden text and dangerous oral tradition, knowing that some truths are buried for a reason.
